If you have been unsuccessful at following a diet, you are not alone– the average person tries 8 diets before seeking professional help. Additionally, research shows that ⅔ of people who attempt a diet will regain more weight than they actually lost once their eating habits stray away from said diet. This is because of the difference between being on a “diet” and building a solid foundation on healthy habits. Here are 3 reasons why diets don’t work for most people.
1.) THE DIET IS TOO RESTRICTIVE – Some diets place restrictions on what you can and cannot eat. The hard part here is that as humans, when we’re told we can’t have something, our minds naturally (and deviously) figure out a way to get it.
2.) THE DIET TAKES AN INCONSISTENT APPROACH – Some diets follow an “80/20 rule”– that is, being super restrictive for the most part, but then allowing you to “let it rip” on the weekends. In order to move the needle forward, you must be consistent with your nutrition.
3.) THE DIET HAS YOU EATING TOO LITTLE – Building upon the restrictiveness of some diets, they’ll also have you eating a calorie amount significantly lower than you should be consuming. The fact is- when you don’t eat enough, you’ll actually slow down your metabolism and defeat the whole purpose of dieting in the first place!
These are simply 3 reasons why diets don’t work; however, there are many, many more. If you have also struggled with keeping up a diet (or 8), DON’T FEAR – we have ALL been there!
