Congrats to our February Member of the Month – Benton Ammerman!

Benton is a student of film, a lover of kombucha, carnivorous plants & learning new skills. He’s a hard-worker & a dependable friend. He has been a part of Locomotion since before we were even open! He built those boxes we jump on! Benton works for a design & remodeling company that keeps him on the go constantly – he has still been able to see HUGE gains in his time with Locomotion. We’re really proud of how far he’s come – here’s what B thinks – in his own words!

    Hustling Kindness @ Locomotion  c. 2017

Q: What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?

A: …Thomas.  I was attempting to gym at planet fitness and that was a joke.  I knew Thomas worked out with Jay and did ‘CrossFit’ which I thought was for psychopaths and people that liked to punish themselves.  I did a ‘Hustle Kindness’ thing for work helping to roll out the mats for the gym and getting it ready to open and met Jay and Emma and realized they weren’t at all what I thought of ‘CrossFit’ people…so my skinny ass decided to give it a try – on a trial basis.

Q:  What was your first impression? How has that changed?

A: Once I joined I realized I was an awkward weak giraffe trying to lift weights. I was extremely self conscious of how I looked and what I was doing – everyone else seemed to really have it down except for me…I was clueless.  But from the powers of Jay, Dane, Clint, Reid, Emma, and Jessica showing me and teaching me how to lift and that it was alright I was lifting the least amount of weight in the class I stuck it through.  I realized CrossFit wasn’t a bunch of scary people throwing weights. It’s really just a lot of people just like me learning new things all of the time and pushing themselves just like I am.

Q: What was your first “bright spot”?

A: I think it would be going to Brooklyn CrossFit  and doing the 12 days of Christmas WOD with a huge gym and like 40 other VERY intense CrossFit people.   Thomas and I had no clue what we were walking into.    But, we survived and had a great time.   I never would have been able to do that if not for Locomotion Fitness.

Q: What are you working on now?

A: Right now I’m laying out the foundations for a house downtown, getting a house in park circle framed up and building a fancy ass outdoor fireplace and grill at IOP.

Oh you mean at the gym?   Working on seriously getting back into it.   And really really looking forward to Carly’s Olympic Weightlifting Class.   Me, the awkward giraffe is excited about Olympic Weightlifting.

Q:  What’s your favorite Locomotion Memory?

A: Well……1- being a part of the Hot Mess Express for last years Locomotion Open.   That was an awesome time and really enjoyed getting to know the gym and fellow members on a whole new level.

2- Emma’s AMAZING counting abilities.   It’s always a great feeling to think your on the last round of a work our only to hear Emma laughing saying oh shit.   We have three more rounds.   Fun times.
Thanks A LOT Benton! 😉
But seriously, thanks for sharing your story and we’ll see you around the gym!
