Client Story – Jessica W.

Congrats to our October Member of the Month, Jessica Wolfrey!

Check out her story in her own words!

Q: What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?

A: I had started to lose a little weight with nutrition and walking but wanted to learn more about how to build strength. My goal weight was over 100 pounds from where I started so I needed something consistent that I liked doing. I have always avoided gyms because they are scary and filled with people and machinery I did not quite understand. I enjoyed sports but found myself getting injured repetitively while playing in social leagues. I wanted a change that would help me be mobile forever.

Q: What was your first impression?  How has that changed?

A: My first impression was this is intense and these people are impressive! The stamina I saw during workouts blew my mind and I was so negative and anxious at first. I did not feel like I was capable of what was being asked of me but the coaches and members were supportive and helped me to change my mindset. Very early on there was a challenge where we literally had to keep it positive and feel our feels without letting out the negativity. This checked me HARD because I had to come face to face with how often I was being negative about myself and what I was capable of. I have been with the gym for over a year now and I feel so capable, it blows my mind. I realize now that all of the impressive people also have things they are challenged with and working on. CrossFit is humbling and so challenging but so worth all of the work and original anxiety! I feel so at home now, the gym is where I look forward to being.

Q: What was your first “bright spot”?

A: Very early on I was not sure I could even run, Jay had me start shuffling here and there and soon I was “running” 200 m, 400m, 600m and all the way to a mile for the first time ever. Being able to move without back pain was definitely my bright spot. Before the gym I was so stiff and immobile. Slowly but surely I loosened up and started to feel the benefits!

Q: What are you working on now?

A: Right now I am dialing back and trying to be consistent with my nutrition and moving at the gym at least 3 times a week. I needed to work on sleeping consistently and eating healthy so I can show up at the gym when I am there. I love all things barbell and through the level method realized it was definitely my strength, with that upper body push and pull and anything stamina is definitely my weakness so working on rounding out is also on my goals list.

Q: What’s your favorite Locomotion Memory?

A: There are endless great memories! I think one of my favorite is from the beginning when “I couldn’t” do box jumps. Emma (the original hype girl) was coaching and had me try a box jump with the soft box at 20 inches. My brain was trying to tell me no but I could hear everyone else in the class rooting me on. I tried and made the jump and everyone went crazy including me. There have been countless moments like this where I do things I KNEW I could not do. It is amazing and the support is filled with so much love and authenticity. It is the best feeling in the world to show up for yourself and have people that you care about celebrate with you. The Loco fam is unmatched!

Jess is an incredible, intelligent, passionate, caring person with an extra dose of spunk. When Jess isn’t in a classroom (teaching OR learning) she can be found adventuring with her husband and pups, or at the gym.  Her consistency and dedication to the process has brought her so far and we are very proud!
