Congrats to our June Member of the Month, Katie Janes!
Katie is a true #GirlBoss. She’s an awesome wife & Mom of 3 who owns & operates her own business (shout out New Life Auto!), volunteers as PTA Treasurer, has an endless source of quick wit and can rap every 90s hip hop song ever written – known also to bust a move on the dance floor.
Q: What brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
A: WHO brought me to CrossFit is more like it. The man, the myth, the legend – Mr. Paul Quigley. He & his wife, Christina are super long time friends of ours, and he knew I was “attempting” to work out at my house by myself, and he obviously knew better. Paul won a challenge going on at the gym when Locomotion first opened, and he was able to gift me a month of free classes as his prize. I can honestly say I would have never tried CrossFit if it wasn’t for that trial period. Just a week into it and I was hooked.
Q: What was your first impression? How has that changed?
A: Hmmmm first impression?? I was SCARED and NERVOUS the whole day before my first class and nothing but dread came over me pulling into the parking lot that day. I can’t remember the exact workout but I think it was one of the girl names, and afterwards after almost dying, I was half jokingly told that workout probably wasn’t the best one to be the first one.
Back to the point: First impression was WTF!!! How is this sustainable to do multiple times a week!!! NOW I can’t imagine life without it. I have more energy to keep up with work and kids and life! I have found something positive to do just for myself. I feel amazing (most of the time 😂). I am doing something that I am incredibly proud of. And I am a much better me because of it.
Q: What was your first “bright spot”?
A: In my first few weeks there we did an OLY Total, I think it’s called. 1 rep max Deadlift, Squat, and Strict Press. I was so incredibly weak, like for real, embarrassing. I was in class with girl who PR’d her Squat at 200 and Deadlift at 300 that day!!! And here I am with just one or two plates on the bar, if any. But it was FINE! I didn’t feel embarrassed! People were cheering me on as if I was the one Deadlifting 300 lbs (it was about a third of that by the way)! That’s when I knew I had found a special place for myself.
Q: What are you working on now?
A: -Consistency, correct movement, cardio
-getting back to my pull up training soon. An injury railroaded my progress so will have to take a few steps back
-training for the Reaper Relay in July- my first ever race!
Q: What’s your favorite Locomotion Memory?
A: Everyday when I walk through that damn door.
Congrats Katie! See ya around the gym!
