May Member of the Month!

Congratulations to our May member of the month, David Aitken! Some of you may know him as Super Dave…and if you don’t, now you do. David was a member of Loco a couple of years prior but recently came back a few months ago in 2022 and we couldn’t be happier about it. He is very much a staple of the 12PM CrossFit class and displays nothing but genuine goodwill and friendliness to everyone he encounters. There’s really no other way to describe Dave but a downright stand-up guy. He’s always willing to work hard and then makes a point to give everyone that fist bump after the work is done. While our goal at Loco is to provide our community with the best hour of their day, Dave no doubt reciprocates by making our hour just as great with his jokes and awesome attitude. Thank you for that, David! Honored to have you as part of our family! Keep up the good work and enjoy your parking spot:upside_down_face:

A little bit more about David in his own words :

1. How long have you been a member at Loco?

I joined Loco in July of 2019. Continued through early 2021, took a short break before returning in July of 2022

2. What is your favorite thing about being a Loco athlete?

The camaraderie and friendships with the other athletes. Cheering others on to meet a goal like a new PR or pick them up when they’re not having their best workout day is awesome. No matter the skill level, the entire class is cheering everyone on from start to finish. That unity of getting through a really tough workout creates a tight bond.

3. What group fitness offerings do you typically participate in at Loco? Do you have a favorite? Discuss.

To date I’ve done some bootcamp, personal training, special weight lifting classes and crossfit. Since returning in July I’ve focused on noon Crossfit classes. I enjoy the challenge of Crossfit, not knowing what new movements the workout will bring and love barbell work.

4. How would you describe the community at Loco?

Loco is a tight knit community of friendly athletes who share common goals; fitness, healthy habits and a love for Park Circle.

5. What advice do you have for someone who is intimidated by group fitness?

Take the plunge! Yes, it can be intimidating like all other “first” in life but after 1-2 classes you’ll be an old pro. Group classes also help push you beyond what can be done solo, seeing others achieve PRs and having them cheer you on provides confidence that you can do it too.

6. Favorite music to sweat to?

Black Keys album Brothers, General workout – 90’s Hip-Hip, Take it to the next level – Girl Talk album All Day (iykyk)

7. Favorite movement/workout?

Barbell! Cleans, squats, push press…

8. Is there a member of the LocoFam that inspires and motivates you to be better? Feel free to give them a shoutout!

Honestly, can’t just name one… it’s all of my noon homies. Coach Bryan, Michael, Katie. All the regulars: Jon, Lewis’s, Clark, Nicole, Paige, Cedric, Casey, William. They always bring a smile to my face. I also need to give Coach Jamo some love. I’ve spent countless hours with him in the gym, and in his backyard during COVID, between personal training and group classes. He’s a badass in the gym and an even better dude.

9. Favorite post-workout meal?

Nothing fancy, protein shake and typically chicken with veggies, mediterranean theme.

10. What fitness-related goals do you have for 2023?

For 2023: Consistency! In the gym 3-4 times a week. Also working on all things kipping (pullups, toes to bar, HSPU) and double unders. Ya know, all the things that take rhythm, I got none.

11. Describe your athletic abilities in five words or less.

Endurance, Focus, Strength

12. Give us your background story – Try to be brief (you can talk about anything from education to career, to pets, to family, to hobbies, etc).

Originally from Ohio but made my way to the SC upstate at the age of 11. I moved to Charleston in 2002 and don’t plan to go anywhere. My lovely wife, Nikki, and I met in Park Circle in 2013 and married in 2017. She provides endless support and is my rock. We are dog lovers who enjoy walks and couch time with our brindle babies, Fiona and Coco. Weekends consist of time with friends/family, boating/fishing and our favorite PC haunts (Paddock/Accent/Holy City). I’m an avid football fan, Go Georgia Bulldogs and Cleveland Browns, and a whiskey enthusiast. Don’t ask about the bottle collection…
