(H)angry Prevention 101

(H)anger- (n.) Bad tempered or irritable as a result of hunger.

Having healthy food on hand can be the difference between having a great nutrition day, and watching your day go up in flames.

It’s 4PM and you’re out running errands when all of a sudden it hits you so hard you think you’re Ronda Rousey- you’re hangry. You need to eat or the world may implode on itself. You don’t have any food with you, BUT there’s a pair of golden arches ¼ mile up the road. You’re starving so you cave, we’ve all been there.

If, however, you have a relatively healthy alternative on hand- you just saved yourself time, money, and the guilt brought on by straying from your goals. It’s a win-win-win.  That’s why being prepared, and having good food on hand ALWAYS, is so important.

 

Healthy Snacks

The easiest (but not cheapest) way to avoid the hanger pitfall is to stock up on high quality, pre-made snacks. High and quality are the keywords in that last sentence, more on that below. Keep them in your center console, glove box, purse, holster, or wherever you can, just always keep them on hand in case of a “hanger emergency”.

There’s a TON of garbage out there disguised as “health-food” snacks. If there’s added sugar, or ingredients that you have a hard time pronouncing DON’T BUY IT! Stay away from Cliff bars, Gatorade bars, Detour bars, and just about any other “bar” that you see at a normal gas station or grocery store.

Instead try one of these healthy options:

RX Bars These bars contain 3 ingredients: egg whites, fruit, and nuts. Depending on the flavor, each bar has a different combination of fruit and nuts. For example, my favorite is the maple sea-salt and its got 3 egg whites, 5 pecans, 4 cashews, and 2 dates. That’s it.  No long list of crap that I have no clue about. And with flavors like peanut butter, blueberry, and coffee chocolate, you really can’t go wrong.

You should think of these as an “In case of emergency break glass” option for times when you’re in need- travelling, camping, hiking, or when you’re stuck at the office.  They’re great to have on hand when you don’t have the time or the means to make your own snack.
