The Locomotion Fitness Story

Where we came from and why we exist.

Locomotion Fitness in Charleston, SC exists because The fitness industry can be exclusive, intimidating, and focused on short-term success at the expense of long-term health. Fitness should be about feeling good as much as it’s about looking good.

I opened Locomotion Fitness to train the physical, mental, and emotional self. We prioritize whole-body health as we provide a safe space for people to push the boundaries of their comfort zones. This is how we grow.

When I joined the Marine Corps I worked out like most people do now – I hopped on some machines and moved some free weights for 30 minutes and then hopped on a treadmill for another half hour. Luckily one of my Gunnery Sergeants showed me a different way to train, we used movements that transferred to the work we did as Marines and I quickly became the fittest I’d been in my life.

Learning that training style changed my life so profoundly that I felt compelled to share it with other Marines.  I started coaching at the gym on base and quickly built a following of people who wanted to be better at life – whether that’s being a better Marine, Mom, Husband, or boss.

After about a year I decided it was time to get some certifications so I could help even more – So I went and got a CrossFit certification, a USA Weightlifting certification, and a nutrition certification so I could pass along more knowledge to everyone around me.

Following the Marine Corps I became the GM and head coach of another gym in town, but I couldn’t really follow my true passion for helping people with more than just their physical health. So I decided to open my own facility that focuses on helping people believe in themselves, belong to a tribe, and get strong physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Locomotion has evolved quite a bit from its early days.  We used to solely offer CrossFit classes but I realized there needs to be much more to our program if I wanted to help people with more than just their physical development.  So I decided to build ‘The Loco Way’ where we focus on five pillars of health:

  1. Fitness
  2. Nutrition
  3. Mindset
  4. Recovery
  5. Relationships

In addition to CrossFit we also offer Bootcamp, yoga, and cycle group classes while helping over half of our membership in one-on-one personal training sessions.  We have an amazing Registered Dietitian on staff who uses ‘Intuitive Eating’ principles to help people develop a positive and healthy relationship to their food.

Getting started with a new health and fitness program can be confusing and overwhelming so we also created a step by step process over the first 100 days of membership to be sure people don’t feel lost or intimidated.

If you’ve ever left a gym because you were confused, frustrated or intimidated, or if you’re nervous about starting a fitness program, I want to meet you. I literally created this business for you. And I’ve worked hard to make it easy for you to find out more about how we can help you.
